TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Disney will hold the Hollywood premiere of its live-action Snow White on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the El Capitan Theatre, Los Angeles, United States.
However, the event will forego the traditional grand red carpet, opting instead for a pre-show party and a screening featuring lead stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.
Unlike typical Disney premieres, this event will have limited media presence, restricting coverage to photographers and personal crews only. The studio has not commented on this decision, but it comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding the Marc Webb-directed film, which is set to hit theaters on Friday, March 21, 2025.
Casting Controversy and Backlash
The casting of Rachel Zegler as Snow White has sparked debate, with critics arguing that her appearance does not align with the classic depiction of the fair-skinned, ebony-haired princess.
Zegler also faced backlash for past comments calling the original 1937 film outdated, particularly in its portrayal of Snow White’s romance.
“She’s not going to be saved by the prince. She’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be," Zegler said, quoted by Variety.
In response to the criticism, Zegler later told Vogue Mexico, “I interpret people’s sentiments towards this film as passion,”
She shared her appreciation for being involved in a project that has evoked strong emotions, acknowledging that disagreements are inevitable.
"What an honor to be a part of something that people feel so passionately about. We’re not always going to agree with everyone who surrounds us and all we can do is our best," she added.
Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, has also been the subject of controversy, with some calling for a boycott due to her outspoken support for Israel amid the ongoing conflict with Palestine.
Despite the controversies, Disney is pressing ahead with its promotional campaign. Zegler and Gadot appeared together at the Oscars on March 2, 2025. Zegler also traveled to Tokyo for press events, and she and director Marc Webb are set to visit Spain. Additionally, Zegler will host a special screening for the Broadway community in New York City.
Disney has confirmed that the Snow White premiere will proceed as planned on March 15, 2025.
