"We have made a decision, and we'll be announcing it very soon, and it'll be 25%," Trump stated, as reported by Antara.
He further elaborated that this tariff would broadly apply, with a particular focus on the automotive sector and other commodities. According to Reuters, Trump has consistently accused the European Union of engaging in unfair trade practices.
Details of the Proposed 25 Percent Tariff
Trump contends that the European Union's policies create obstacles for American exports, particularly in the automotive and agricultural sectors. Currently, the European Union imposes a 10 percent import tariff on American vehicles, while the United States only levies a 2.5 percent tariff on cars from Europe.
Trump asserts that this new tariff policy will encourage increased automotive manufacturing within the United States, especially in states like Michigan, which boasts a substantial automotive industry.
This tariff policy is anticipated to significantly impact European Union exports to the United States. The European Union, through the European Commission, has conveyed that they will promptly respond should the tariff be enacted.
