TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dozens of inmates at the Class IIB Kutacane Penitentiary in Southeast Aceh Regency, Aceh Province, reportedly escaped. Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections for Aceh, Yan Rusmanto confirmed the escape.
However, Yan stated that he has not yet determined the exact number of inmates who fled the prison. "I cannot confirm how many people escaped. Currently, the prison officers are conducting a headcount of the inmates. I will provide the details and the cause as soon as I have the information," said Yan Rusmanto as quoted by Antara on Monday night, March 10, 2025.
Yan Rusmanto said that he was traveling to Kutacane, Southeast Aceh Regency, by land. The journey to the area is estimated to take 16 hours.
The inmates escaped on Monday afternoon, just before iftar. Some fled through the main gate, while others escaped from the prison roof.
People outside the prison panicked upon seeing a large number of inmates jumping from the main gate. Some individuals were also seen recording videos of the inmates' escape using their phones.
