Drone Strike Targets Gaza Aid Flotilla in International Waters

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several aid ships heading towards Gaza were attacked multiple times by drones in international waters on Tuesday night, with projectiles launched at several boats and explosions heard nearby.

The Global Sumud Flotilla Committee stated, as reported by Anadolu, that drones dropped incendiary projectiles at the Yulara and Ohwayla ships. They described one as a smoke bomb and the other as a device that hit the ship's obstacle before falling into the sea without igniting.

The committee reported two loud explosions, believed to be stun grenades, heard around the fleet. Meanwhile, at least 15 drones hovered low over the Alma ship and five others circled Deir Yassin at varying altitudes.

The committee confirmed that no casualties or major damage were reported, but emergency protocols were activated on all ships. The committee also reported electronic interference affecting communication.

"These tactics and attempts at intimidation will not deter the flotilla from its mission to deliver aid and break the blockade," the committee said, urging international actors to ensure the convoy's safety.

Israel had previously threatened to take action against the humanitarian aid convoy to Gaza if it continued to sail through their blockade, cited from Middle East Eye.

The fleet, consisting of approximately 50 ships, set sail earlier this month, intending to break the Israeli blockade and deliver humanitarian aid, especially medical supplies, to Gaza, where 2.4 million Palestinian residents have been under siege for 18 years.

UN investigators recently concluded that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, where more than 65,300 people have been killed since October 2023.
