TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8-revised from the initial M5.1-shook the southern Banten and Sukabumi areas in West Java on Sunday afternoon, April 6, 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the tremor detected at 13:55 WIB (Western Indonesia Time) originated from the southern Indian Ocean, about 111 kilometers southwest of Bayah, Banten.
"The results of the source mechanism analysis indicate that this earthquake has a strike-slip mechanism," said the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, Daryono, in a written statement.
The M4.8 earthquake is classified as shallow with a depth of 46 kilometers due to deformation in the Indo-Australian plate. There were no aftershocks recorded until 14:40 WIB.
"Modeling results indicate that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami," stated Daryono.
According to BMKG data, the tremor scale felt by the community in the Surade area ranged between III-IV MMI. This means that the earthquake tremor was felt by many people and could cause windows or doors to rattle and walls to make noise.
The tremor was rated III MMI in the Bayah, Malingping, and Pelabuhan Ratu areas of Sukabumi Regency. It was rated II-III MMI in the Nagrak, Cibadak, Ciracap, Kabandungan, Kalapanunggal, and Nyalindung areas. Its effects spread to the city of Sukabumi and the Cibeber District with a scale of II MMI.
