TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Raung in Indonesia’s East Java Province erupted on Thursday morning, March 13, sending an ash column approximately 1,500 meters above the summit or around 4,832 meters above sea level. The last recorded eruption occurred in December.
Burhan Alethea, an officer at the Raung Volcano Observation Post (PGA), reported that the eruption occurred at 06:59 West Indonesia Time (WIB), with thick gray ash drifting west and northwest. “The eruption was recorded with a maximum amplitude of 7 mm and lasted for 34 seconds,” he said in a written report.
According to the report, seismic monitoring over the past 24 hours detected two volcanic tremors with amplitudes of 2 mm lasting 31-37 seconds, nine distant tectonic quakes with amplitudes of 2-32 mm lasting 49-130 seconds, and continuous tremors with amplitudes of 0.5-1.0 mm.
As per Burhan’s report, Mount Raung status is now at Alert Level II (Caution). The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has advised residents and visitors to stay at least 3 kilometers away from the crater, avoid descending into the caldera, and refrain from staying overnight near the summit.
Sigit Purnomo, chief of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Bondowoso, confirmed the eruption and urged residents to stay calm. “We are informing the public not to panic and to follow PVMBG’s recommendations,” he told Tempo on Thursday morning.
The eruption directly affects disaster-prone areas across three regencies:
- Bondowoso Regency: Sempol (Ijen), Sumberwringin, Sukosari, Tapen, Wonosari, Tlogosari, and Pujer.
- Banyuwangi Regency: Songgon, Sempu, Glenmore, and Kalibaru.
- Jember Regency: Silo, Sumberjambe, and Ledokombo.
