TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Monday that the country will hold a reconstruction conference for Gaza soon after a ceasefire is reached between Israel and Hamas in the Palestinian enclave.
"Egypt will, as soon as we reach a ceasefire, host an international reconstruction conference on the Gaza Strip to mobilize the necessary funding for the Arab-Islamic reconstruction plan," he said at a conference on the two-state solution on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, as reported by Arab News.
The international conference, led by France and Saudi Arabia, officially titled the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, brought together international leaders who urged immediate steps to end the genocide in Gaza and advance a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"This will ensure that the Palestinian people will remain on their land, and will help them overcome the huge losses caused by the aggression," Madbouly emphasized.
Madbouly made this statement as the recognition of the State of Palestine dominated the first day of the UN General Assembly on Monday in New York, United States.
Several European leaders announced their recognition of the State of Palestine at a high-level meeting held on Monday on the sidelines of the event.
Additional countries recognizing Palestine have now joined approximately 147 of the 193 UN member states that have officially recognized Palestinian statehood as of April this year.
As reported by Anadolu, the meeting framed as a historic step to end the Israeli genocide in Gaza and advance the two-state solution.
With over 80 percent of the international community now recognizing the State of Palestine, diplomatic pressure on Israel is increasing as the genocide in Gaza continues, where over 65,300 Palestinians have been killed, and the enclave has turned into rubble.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres began his address by expressing "disappointment" that Palestinian Authority members, including President Mahmoud Abbas, had been denied visas to enter the United Nations. The US State Department cited "national security" reasons.
He asked the delegates what the alternative to the two-state solution would be.
"A one-State scenario where Palestinians are denied basic rights? Expelled from their homes and their land, forced to live under perpetual occupation, discrimination and subjugation?"
"How is this possible in the 21st century? How is it acceptable? This is neither peace nor justice," he exclaimed.
"It will only increase the growing isolation of Israel on the global stage. Let's be clear: Statehood for the Palestinians is a right, not a reward," he emphasized.
"And denying statehood would be a gift to extremists everywhere."
