TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Egypt on Monday submitted a proposal to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to consider the establishment of international representation in the occupied territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, Palestine.
The proposal was made during a meeting in Cairo between the Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, foreign ambassadors, and international representatives to discuss the recovery of the health sector in Gaza.
"There is a proposal for the Security Council to study establishing an international presence in Gaza and the West Bank," Abdelatty said in a statement quoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt as reported by Anadolu.
“This will be done through the adoption of a Security Council resolution to deploy peacekeeping or international protection forces with clear mandates and powers, under a timetable that ensures the establishment of an independent Palestinian state," he added.
However, Abdelatty did not specify the current progress of the proposal.
Before the Emergency Arab Summit on Gaza held in Egypt on March 4, Arab countries called for the deployment of peacekeeping forces in Gaza and the West Bank as part of political efforts to establish a Palestinian state.
According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the Arab countries' plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing the Palestinian population has received broad support from the region and the international community.
Abdelatty also outlined several key conditions for the plan's success, including stabilizing the ceasefire in Gaza, managing early recovery and reconstruction efforts by ensuring Palestinian ownership, and treating Gaza as an integral part of Palestine.
He also emphasized that the Palestinian Authority needs to return to Gaza to be able to govern.
In addition, Abdelatty revealed that Egypt and Jordan have begun training Palestinian police officers in preparation for their deployment in Gaza.
Since the brutal Israeli attacks on Gaza began in October 2023, nearly 48,600 Palestinians have died, mostly women and children, while over 112,000 others have been injured.
The attacks that devastated Gaza were briefly halted through a ceasefire agreement and a prisoner exchange that has been in effect since January 19.
In November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Furthermore, Israel is also facing a genocide lawsuit in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the war it waged in the Gaza Strip.
