TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor candidate number 1, Suswono, disagrees with the Jakarta Provincial Government's policy to implement household waste levy in January 2025. He believes that the strategy is not yet needed to address environmental pollution issues.
"This waste levy is not necessary, what needs to be prioritized is to build a zero waste culture," said Suswono during the third debate of the Jakarta gubernatorial election at Hotel Sultan on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
He stated that the culture of zero household waste generation needs to be emphasized to every household. Furthermore, he noted the importance of recycling that can be done at the neighborhood and community levels.
Ridwan Kamil-Suswono pair, he said, will address this waste issue through sustainable management from upstream to downstream. "From the upstream, we hope there will be modern machines that I believe will enable waste management to be completed at the neighborhood level," he said.
Previously, the Jakarta Provincial Government planned to start implementing household waste levy in January 2025. This scheme will be implemented in accordance with Regional Regulation (Perda) of Jakarta Province Number 1 Year 2024 concerning Local Taxes and Levies.
Head of Jakarta Environment Agency Asep Kuswanto stated that the obligation for the levy follows the Regional Regulation enacted on January 1, 2024. "This is not about burdens but about inviting the community to care for the environment," said Asep after the event at PKK Melati Jaya Building, Ragunan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.
He mentioned that waste management requires significant costs. "The more the community realizes the importance of waste management, the lighter the burden will be on the government itself," he said.
Households using electricity between 450 Volt-ampere (VA) and 900 VA will be exempted from the levy. Those using 1,300-2,200 VA will be charged Rp 10,000 per month. Consumers with 3,500-5,500 VA will be charged Rp 30,000 per month, while those using above 6,600 VA will be charged Rp 77,000 per month.
