England captain Leah Williamson says the Lionesses are embracing a new challenge as they aim to win the Euros on foreign soil.
Williamson and Co kick off their highly anticipated title defence against France on Saturday night. When asked whether the squad sees this tournament as a chance to break new ground, the skipper emphasised the team’s forward-looking mindset.
‘It’s new territory and you explained it very well – not necessarily looking at it as a defence but a new challenge and an opportunity to do something new,’ she said.
‘We take any challenge that comes our way but it’s more about focusing on the day-to-day and that’s always the dream.’
The squad features seven players making their debut at a major tournament, including rising stars Grace Clinton, Jess Park, and wildcard selection Michelle Agyemang. Williamson spoke about how the team’s senior players are guiding them through the experience.
She said: ‘I think the game has changed a lot since the experienced members of the team played their first tournament – the whole landscape of women's football (has changed) – so we have to take into account those things when we speak to them.
Leah Williamson insisted that her said are looking to embrace a new challenge in the Euros
The Lionesses won the competition back in 2022 on home soil and enter as champions
Their opening game comes against a French side missing injured captain Griedge Mbock
‘But I think it's giving them as much freedom to enjoy the experience but know that they're ready to perform and sort of make their mark on the pitch and just trying to find that balance.
‘I would never want anybody to come and be so anxious it consumed them, but at the same time we're here, it's different. There's lots of shiny things when you come to a tournament and lots of experiences to be had, but ultimately the main focus is on the pitch.
‘And I think based off of training, and I'm sure Sarina agrees, everybody's focus is football first, which has been great.
‘I think sometimes, players that have never been to a tournament – this was probably me when I went to my first one – you have to keep them in line a little bit because they get a bit distracted. But there's no fear of that with these guys.’
As for the opposition, France’s centre-back and captain Griedge Mbock has been ruled out of Saturday night’s game due to a calf injury.
England's match against France kicks off at 8pm and will be broadcast live on ITV.
