England crashed to a 336-run defeat in the second Test against India at Edgbaston with the visitors levelling the series 1-1.

The hosts had accepted that a draw was the best they could hope for after being set a huge target of 608 to chase.

They were unable to hold on and were bowled out for 271 with 27 overs still in front of them.

Mail Sport's Richard Gibson was at Edgbaston to rate the players.

Ben Duckett - 5

Came crashing back down to earth following his sublime display in Leeds, as Akash Deep defeated him on both edges.

Ben Duckett was unable to repeat his first Test heroics with a duck and a score of 25

Zak Crawley - 2

Twice followed balls outside off stump with disastrous consequences, and also fluffed the chance to limit India’s lead by dropping Rishabh Pant early on.

Ollie Pope - 4

Replicating previous series declines will now be a worry after England’s vice-captain was turned around first innings by one that left him and unable to cope with extra bounce on the fifth morning.

Joe Root - 5

Can count himself unfortunate with his dismissals: strangled down the leg-side and dispatched by a wonder ball, but a disappointing Test nevertheless.

Harry Brook - 8.5

Went up and down the gears to rescue England from 84 for five, but his involvement in a triple century stand proved immaterial in the end.

Ben Stokes - 5

Yet to fully get into the series with the bat after precious little match preparation, and he struggled to develop the same Headingley rhythm with the ball.

Jamie Smith - 9.5

On a different level. Now has the highest score by an England wicketkeeper and his second-innings 88 has taken him to within three runs of 1000 in just 12 Test matches.

Jamie Smith scored 272 runs over two innings and was the standout player for the hosts

Chris Woakes - 5.5

The match would have taken a different course, but for Woakes twice being denied wickets by umpire’s call on review, but, worryingly, his average pace was 79 miles per hour across both innings.

Brydon Carse - 5

For all the effort and an excellent new-ball spell in the second innings, the Durham man finished with just two wickets in his worst Test return to date.

Josh Tongue - 5.5

Used as a battering ram, but showed with his second-innings wickets that he is miscast in such a role.

Shoaib Bashir - 4

India are comfortable sitting in against England’s young off-spinner, and his wickets in a match return of 71-3-286-5 were all as a result of aggression against him.

India

Yashasvi Jaiswal 8.5, KL Rahul 6.5, Karun Nair 6, Shubman Gill 10, Rishabh Pant 8, Nitish Kumar Reddy 2, Ravindra Jadeja 8, Washington Sundar 6.5, Akash Deep 9.5, Mohammed Siraj 9.5, Prasidh Krishna 5.5
