TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday, February 10, 2025, demanded that Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu pay compensation of USD 100 billion (around Rp1.6 quadrillion) for the damage that occurred in the Gaza Strip. According to him, instead of looking for a place for Gazans who cannot be evicted from their land, Netanyahu should find USD 100 billion to cover the damage he has caused in Gaza.
Last week, United States President Donald Trump said Israel would hand over the Gaza Strip to the United States after the fighting was over to be developed into a "Middle East Riviera."
Trump called Gaza a "site of destruction" and suggested that Palestinians move to other countries, such as Jordan or Egypt. He also did not rule out sending United States troops to Gaza and promised to come directly to the region.
Trump's statement drew criticism from around the world. Trump clarified his plan in comments on his Truth Social web platform. He had acknowledged the possibility of US troops being deployed to Gaza.
"The Gaza Strip will be handed over to the United States by Israel after the fighting ends," he said as reported by Reuters, Thursday, February 6, 2025.
According to Trump, Palestinians will be resettled in much safer and more beautiful communities, with new and modern homes, in the region. "There will be no need for US soldiers!" he said.
The head of the Israeli Foreign Authority, Gideon Saar, supported Trump's proposal by calling Gaza a "failed experiment." Meanwhile, the Hamas group, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia rejected the idea of moving Gazans.
