TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The European Union (EU) and Agence française de développement (AFD) strengthen their support to Indonesia on sustainable ocean management. They have signed a Contribution Agreement on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
France's AFD also signed EU grants totalling EUR 7 million to support the "For an Evidence-Based and Sustainable Ocean Management" cooperation program. These grants are part of a broader effort by Team Europe under the Global Gateway initiative to advance sustainable ocean management. AFD will be in charge of these grants alongside EUR 187.6 million loans.
The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) will receive EUR 3.55 million in funds from the EU grants for modernizing four Indonesian fishing ports. In addition, EUR 3.45 of EU grants will fund the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN) project, KrisNa Project.
The new grants are aimed to enhance marine and coastal resource management, address climate change, and safeguard marine ecosystems in Indonesia over five years.
Director of Loans and Grants of the Ministry of Finance, Dian Lestari stated that the Indonesian government will collaborate with the EU and AFD to ensure the future of marine ecosystems for generations to come. "Let this partnership serve a beacon of collaboration, innovation, and responsibility in protecting our oceans," said Dian.
As a key partner in this collaboration, the Chairperson of BRIN Laksana Tri Handoko expressed his honorary. Laksana explained that the EU grants will strengthen the marine scientific research ecosystem in providing crucial data and information to support national priorities (Asta Cita). In addition to enhancing Indonesia's blue economy, this collaboration contributes to global sustainable development.
"We look forward to the impactful outcomes of this cooperation for the benefit of present and future generations," said Laksana.
Director of Fishing Ports at KKP Tri Aris Prabowo appreciates the EU and AFD for signing the grant agreement. According to Tri, this project is aligned with KKP's efforts to implement sustainable fisheries management. KKP will also partner with BRIN to support stock assessment efforts in Indonesia.
"KKP looks forward to the collaboration with our colleagues in AFD, EU, BAPPENAS, and Ministry of Finance in the blue economy initiatives through the improvement of sustainable fisheries and management efforts," said Tri.
“The EU and the Member States’ partnerships with Indonesia support President Prabowo’s Asta Cita. In this case, the EU and France are advancing Indonesia’s food security and its blue economy through sustainable ocean management," said EU Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam H.E. Denis Chaibi.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of French-Indonesian diplomatic relations. Ambassador of France to Indonesia, Timor Leste and ASEAN H.E. Fabien Penone said the strong scientific cooperation between the two countries will play a key role in achieving the project's goals.
To know the ocean better, AFD country director in Indonesia, Yann Martres asserted this project will improve the knowledge of the Indonesian seas and bridge the gap between science and policy.
