EU Sees No Reason to Derail Ties with U.S. Despite Trump's Policies

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Sunday, March 9, 2025, that there is no reason to 'de-risk' the relationship between the EU and the U.S., as cited by Anadolu.

Von der Leyen has spearheaded changes in the EU’s relationship with China, which she described as de-risking, not decoupling from Beijing.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels marking the first 100 days of her second term as the head of the European Commission, der Leyen said the answer is a “clear no” when asked if a similar approach is now necessary with Washington.

"It’s a completely different relationship with the United States than we have with China," she said.

She added that the U.S. move last week to suspend aid to Ukraine, along with the halt in intelligence sharing, was a strong warning for Europe to enhance its defense capabilities.

Von der Leyen said the evolving geopolitical landscape will require the EU to reassess its upcoming long-term budget proposal, which she said will be launched in mid-summer.

Despite EU leaders' struggles to build a clear line of communication with the Trump administration, von der Leyen said she has been able to work with the U.S. president. She said she will meet with Trump in due time.

Von der Leyen and Trump previously met during his first term as U.S. President, but not since he returned to office in January 2025.
