Europe Ready to Work Together for Ukraine's Peace, Zelensky Says

3 hours ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claims Europe is uniting for genuine peace and security guarantees for Kyiv. He made the statement in a video speech on Sunday, March 2, 2025, after a summit meeting with European leaders in London.

Zelensky stated that there will be many meetings and joint efforts in the coming days and weeks.

European troops would be deployed if a more substantial peace agreement was reached, he said. It was not clear whether other nations had agreed to the terms, as quoted by Reuters.

Zelensky said after the meeting that he left London with "Europe's clear support" and readiness to cooperate.

"There will be diplomacy for the sake of peace," he said in his nightly video address.

"And for the sake of us all being together - Ukraine, all of Europe and definitely, definitely America."

Zelensky mentioned that Europe will establish a common position in the near future, which will then be conveyed to partners in the United States. He is also confident about the U.S. support so far.

The summit, led by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and attended by numerous European leaders, followed a public dispute between Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance at the White House.

When Zelensky voiced skepticism about diplomacy achieving peace, Trump and Vance reprimanded him for lacking gratitude toward U.S. support.

As a result, the signing ceremony for the mineral agreement and the press conference were canceled, and Zelensky departed from the White House.

Meanwhile, France and Britain have proposed a limited one-month ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, excluding ground combat.

Zelensky insists that any ceasefire must include clear security guarantees from the West to prevent Russia, which occupies about 20% of Ukrainian territory, from launching further attacks. However, Trump has declined to offer such assurances.

On Sunday, Starmer hosted European leaders in London, announcing their agreement to draft a peace plan to present to Washington.

During an interview en route to the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested the possibility of a one-month truce, though it has yet to receive public backing from allies.

"Such a truce on air, sea and energy infrastructure would allow us to determine whether Russian President Vladimir Putin is acting in good faith when he commits to a truce," French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said.

"And that's when real peace negotiations could start."
