TEMPO.CO, Batam - The Riau Islands Provincial Government will take measures to mitigate the impact of bad weather on tourists vacationing in the Riau Islands ahead of the Chinese New Year. One of them is to socialize the current weather conditions in the Riau Islands area.

"This (dissemination of extreme weather) is important, especially for tourists and fishers," said the Regional Secretary of Riau Islands Province, Adi Prihantara, when he received a visit from the Director of Weather Modification Operations of Riau Islands Meteorology Agency or BMKG, Endarwin, at the Regional Secretary's Office in Dompak, on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

In addition, Adi said that they disseminated the potential risk of disasters to tourists and the public so that the public is more aware of the current conditions. "This dissemination is important considering the increasing rainfall that has hit the Riau Islands in the last few days. So that we are all more vigilant," he said.

One of the dissemination, Adi said, is related to the BMKG Info application and Indonesia Indonesian Weather Information for Shipping (INA-WIS), which provides weather data, climate, air quality, earthquake, and maritime weather information. "We also ask the public to easily monitor weather forecasts through the application, especially as the Chinese New Year is approaching, which is expected to increase the number of tourist visits to the Riau Islands," he said.

Weather information on the application can be monitored one week to three days before extreme weather occurs. Adi also instructed the Riau Islands Tourism Office and the Riau Islands Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to immediately follow up on mitigation measures and gather sub-district heads and tourism village managers to disseminate weather information to the public.

Extreme weather to continue until April

Meanwhile, Riau Islands BMKG Director of Weather Modification Operations, Endarwin, said that extreme weather with high to very high rainfall will continue until March-April 2025.

"Phenomena such as the weak La Nina, Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), and cold surge also affect the high rainfall and waves in the Riau Islands waters. This condition can potentially cause disasters such as flooding and landslides if not properly mitigated," said Endarwin.

Riaus Islands BMKG will continue to monitor weather developments and provide early warnings down to the sub-district level, especially before the Chinese New Year. BMKG also offers the Digital Weather for Traffic (DWT) feature, which provides weather information on travel routes, airports, ports, and intersections.

"This early warning is designed to help tourists and the public organize their travel time and adapt to weather conditions. This step is also expected to provide comfort and safety to the public and tourists during the Chinese New Year holiday season while minimizing the impact of extreme weather in Riau Islands," said Endarwin.

Since January 11, 2025, the Riau Islands have been experiencing extreme weather conditions. Several districts and cities have been flooded. Landslides have killed at least four residents in Batam City, and thousands of families have been affected by flooding in Bintan Regency.
