TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken over the case of the fatal shooting of a woman by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Thursday, amid escalating tensions across the state.
Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) Superintendent Drew Evans said the BCA will no longer be involved in investigating the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a mother of three who was shot inside her car by ICE agents on Wednesday.
“The investigation would now be led solely by the FBI, and the BCA would no longer have access to the case materials, scene evidence or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough and independent investigation,” Evans said on Thursday, as reported by Al Jazeera.
He added that although it had previously been agreed that the BCA would investigate the shooting, the U.S. Attorney’s Office made the change.
“Without complete access to the evidence, witnesses and information collected, we cannot meet the investigative standards that Minnesota law and the public demands,” Evans said.
Critics have questioned whether the FBI investigation will be impartial under the Trump administration, amid allegations of politicization.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, a Democrat, told CNN that the decision for the FBI to take over the case—led by Kash Patel, a close ally of President Donald Trump—is “very concerning.”
According to Ellison, state authorities can pursue an investigation with or without federal cooperation. Based on the evidence he has seen, some of which has not been made public, state charges against the ICE agent remain very possible.
Good leaves behind a 15-year-old daughter and two sons, aged 12 and six, The Washington Post reported.
State and federal officials have given widely differing accounts of the shooting. An unidentified ICE agent shot Good, a U.S. citizen, in a residential neighborhood.
The officer was part of 2,000 federal agents deployed to Minneapolis in what the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described as its “largest-ever DHS operation.”
DHS officials, including Secretary Kristi Noem, defended the shooting as self-defense, claiming Good attempted to run over the officer in an act of “domestic terrorism.” Good had reportedly just dropped her child at school prior to the incident.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, called the government’s statement “nonsense” and “garbage,” citing bystander video footage that appears to contradict the official account.
Shooting Timeline
Video footage recorded by a bystander and shared online shows two masked officers approaching Good’s stopped SUV on a Minneapolis street. The vehicle had halted for unspecified reasons, with several unmarked federal vehicles present.
ICE agents approached, telling Good to “get out of the ******* car,” while one officer reached for the door handle as the SUV reversed. Another officer, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, fired three shots into Good’s car as it moved forward with the wheels turning to the right. The shooter was positioned to the left of the vehicle.
Good’s SUV then collided with a parked white vehicle. It is unclear whether she was killed at the moment of the crash.
The footage appears to show no physical contact between Good and the officers. She remained in the vehicle, while Noem stated that she was taken to a hospital and later released.
Trump claimed on social media that the woman “ran over ICE officers,” despite discrepancies in the video evidence.
Another video shows federal agents preventing bystanders from assisting Good, including a man who identified himself as a doctor.
“May I check her pulse?” the man asked. “No. Back up. Now!” an agent replied, as the footage zoomed in on Good slumped over in the SUV, blood covering the front of her body.
