TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been placed in a fortified underground hospital to protect him from potential rocket attacks after undergoing prostate surgery, Middle East Eye reports.

Earlier on Sunday, Netanyahu underwent prostate surgery at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem.

His office said in a statement that Netanyahu was then moved to a fortified underground recovery ward for his safety.

On Saturday, Israeli forces intercepted two rockets from the Beit Hanoun area of Gaza - a rare occurrence after nearly 15 months of war.

Long-range rockets from Gaza have become increasingly rare in the past year, given the impact of Israel's military campaign on Hamas' ability to attack Israel.

"The operation ended successfully without complications," the prime minister's office said. "The prime minister is awake, in good condition and fully conscious."

Netanyahu will now remain in the fortified underground recovery ward for several days amid fears for his life.

The prime minister was under full anesthesia for the procedure, which his office said was scheduled after doctors discovered an infection in his urinary tract caused by an enlarged prostate.

The head of urology at Hadassah Medical Center, Professor Ofer Gofrit, said the procedure “went according to plan” with no complications.

Israeli media reported that Justice Minister Yariv Levin will temporarily serve as acting prime minister during the procedure. Defense Minister Israel Katz is authorized to form a security cabinet if necessary.

Netanyahu has gone to great lengths to show the Israeli public that he is healthy enough to lead Israel. But the 75-year-old prime minister has struggled with health complications in recent years. Last year, doctors implanted a pacemaker in him after he suffered a “temporary heart block.”

The surgery coincided with his ongoing trial, in which an Israeli court has charged him with several counts of fraud.

Netanyahu’s lawyers asked the Jerusalem District Court to cancel the hearing in which the prime minister was to appear. The court granted the request and said the hearing would resume on Monday, January 6.

Support for Netanyahu's government plummets

A poll in Israel has found that most Israelis are dissatisfied with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, and support holding general elections after the ongoing offensive against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip ends.

The poll was conducted online by Israeli news outlet Kan, marking two years since the formation of Israel's current coalition government, according to Middle East Monitor. Sixty-four percent of Israelis appear to be dissatisfied with the performance of Netanyahu's cabinet, while 46 percent believe that Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and Shin Bet Chief Ronen Bar should resign.

The survey also found that 77 percent of Israeli respondents support the establishment of an official committee of inquiry into the October 7 attacks by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, as well as the Israeli government and military's response to the attacks.

In addition, 70 percent reportedly support holding general elections after the war in Gaza ends. However, when that will happen remains unclear. In addition to accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, Netanyahu's government has also been accused of continuously thwarting ceasefire talks.

The poll also asked about the issue of compulsory military service in the Israeli military. Sixty-eight percent of respondents supported compulsory military service for all Israelis, including ultra-Orthodox Jews. Only 17 percent supported maintaining the current exemption system, indicating significant support for Israel's war on Gaza, despite growing discontent with Netanyahu's government.
