TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finland's President Alexander Stubb on Wednesday at the 80th UN General Assembly called for the reform of the UN Security Council to enhance representation for underrepresented regions and limit the veto rights of each country.
As reported by Anadolu, Stubb argued that these changes are necessary to maintain the central role of the UN in promoting peace.
"The number of permanent members should be increased in the UN Security Council. At least there should be two new seats for Asia, two for Africa and one for Latin America," he said.
"No single state should have a veto power, and if a member of the Security Council violates the UN Charter, its voting rights should be suspended," he suggested, while proposing reforms for the UN body responsible for maintaining international peace and security.
This statement echoes his call on Monday at the Future Summit at the UN, as reported by Anadolu.
Stubb stated that the UN has not met its targets regarding global crises, as the world is currently witnessing four simultaneous major wars in Ukraine, Palestine, Sudan, and Syria.
Emphasizing the need for collective efforts to address these issues, he said that the UN Security Council has failed in its primary task.
"The main task of the UNSC (Security Council) is to preserve peace, and let's be honest, it has failed to do so. And you know what the UNSC, in my mind, does not reflect the world of today," he said.
Stubb criticized the lack of representation in the council, as there is only one country from Asia and no representation from Latin America and Africa.
He continued by saying that he will present three reform proposals at the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
