TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, along with leaders of Arab countries, is claimed to have asked United States President Donald Trump to lead the resolution of the conflict in Gaza.
The joint statement with the leaders of Arab countries, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, and Pakistan, was conveyed during a multilateral meeting held during the UN General Assembly.
"Requesting leadership from the United States to resolve the issues in Gaza and Palestine," said Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono in a media briefing session at the UN Headquarters in New York, United States, on Tuesday, as reported by Antara.
Minister Sugiono stated that the multilateral meeting provided President Trump with an overview of the current situation in the region, including the sentiments of some neighboring Arab countries regarding Palestine.
"Hopes for the involvement of the United States in achieving a ceasefire were also conveyed. Then achieve peace, and then also efforts towards reaching a two-state solution," Sugiono added.
Meanwhile, President Prabowo expressed Indonesia's willingness to contribute to every stage of the peace process in Gaza. Indonesia is also ready to send peacekeeping forces under the UN Security Council's mandate if needed.
In his speech at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, President Prabowo conveyed Indonesia's readiness to send peacekeeping forces.
"The President conveyed a quite significant number, 20,000 personnel for peacekeeping duties, and this is not only in Gaza and Palestine, but also worldwide," Sugiono quoted Prabowo's statement.
Although the meeting was scheduled at the last minute, Sugiono emphasized that it was quite productive. Trump welcomed it positively, and significant progress was made in resolving the conflict in the Middle East and achieving a ceasefire in Gaza.
"I think President Trump responded to it positively because, as we know, what is happening is actually a humanitarian disaster," he said.
