TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - France will postpone this year's G7 Summit to avoid scheduling conflict with a planned mixed martial arts event at the White House during US President Donald Trump's birthday, reported by Politico, citing Anadolu on Friday.
Two officials familiar with the plans told Politico that Paris opted to shift the date after learning that the White House intended to hold an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event on June 14, 2026.
"On June 14, next year, we're going to have a big UFC fight at the White House, right at the White House grounds," Trump said in Virginia last October.
The date coincides with Flag Day in the US and Trump's 80th birthday.
Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White told CBS News on Thursday that the logistics for the event had been finalized. White said the event would gather up to 5,000 people on the south lawn of the White House.
The G7 Summit, initially scheduled for June 14-16, has been postponed to June 15-17 in Evian-les-Bains, a resort and spa town on the shore of Lake Geneva.
French President Emmanuel Macron's office declined to confirm whether the change, now officially announced on the G7 website, was directly related to the UFC event and stated that the new schedule was "the result of our consultations with G7 partners."
The US Embassy in Paris did not immediately respond to Politico's request for comment.
The possibility of the G7 Summit being postponed due to Trump's birthday was first reported by local media LeMessager.
