TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Embassy of France, in partnership with the European Union, officially launched Indonesia’s Energy Transition Facility (IETF) to support the development of greener energy policies and renewable energy projects across the country.
The launch of IETF comes amid last week’s comments from Indonesia's special envoy for climate change and energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, who suggested that Indonesia could withdraw from the Paris Agreement.
The special envoy, who is also the younger brother of the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, made the comments after President Trump’s announcement that the US will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.
The organizers of the IETF launch requested that media representatives refrain from asking questions regarding the special envoy’s comments on Indonesia’s possible exit from the Paris Agreement.
“We have all seen that the United States has left the Paris Agreement; we regret this profoundly,” said Diana Acconcia, Director for Climate Action for the European Commission, at the IETF launch.

The IETF is a five-year, 14.7-million-euro (Rp249 billion) program, running from 2025 to 2030, and will see the EU work with the Indonesian government to develop sustainable energy policies and scope renewable energy projects.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will oversee the development of IETF, collaborating across state-owned enterprises, the energy sector, and the wider private sector.
The IETF will be an important stepping stone for Indonesia to meet Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) targets.
The JETP is a $20 billion agreement signed at the 2022 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Bali, marking the largest energy transition financing package in the world. The JETP seeks to mobilize public and private financing to support a fair transition to decarbonized energy in Indonesia.
“The country’s leadership in the JETP framework not only enhances Indonesia’s efforts but also sets an example for other nations,” said French Ambassador to Indonesia Fabien Penone at the launch of the IETF.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding climate commitments, Indonesia stands to gain significantly from initiatives like the IETF and JETP, which offer a pathway to sustainable growth and a leadership role in the global energy transition.
