TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Travelers heading to France will now face a new regulation: 'a solidarity tax' added to airplane tickets departing from French airports. According to the French government's Public Service website, as reported by Fox News, the tax takes effect on March 1, 2025.
Approved by the Senate on February 6, 2025, the tax mandates passengers pay 7.40 euros (approximately Rp130,000) for domestic routes, routes within the European Union and the Economic Area, including the UK and Switzerland, and destinations less than a thousand kilometers from France.
For destinations outside these zones, a 15-euro tax (approximately Rp264,000) will be imposed.
"Depending on company policy, flight prices will not necessarily increase: these increases could be absorbed without impacting the price of plane tickets," reads the Public Service site.
The French government's new regulation has drawn negative reactions from various parties. ACI, representing European airlines and airports, urged the government to reconsider in October 2024.
"If confirmed, this new plan would inadvertently weaken the competitiveness of French aviation, penalize citizens and, ultimately reduce the sector's economic contribution," Olivier Jankovec, ACI Europe Director General, said in a press release at the time.
Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary also voiced opposition, stating, "France is already a high-tax country and if it increases already high taxes further, we will probably reduce our capacity. France is going against the tide," as reported by Mirror.
O'Leary argued that imposing excessively high taxes on airplane tickets will not improve Europe's efficiency or competitiveness. Since October 2024, Ryanair has threatened to cut half of its routes to and from France, deeming them economically unfeasible.
According to the Tourism Ministry, France welcomed over 100 million international visitors in 2024. Previously, civil flight fares were around US$2 (approximately Rp32,000) for economy class flights within the European Union and around US$7 (approximately Rp114,000) for other destinations.
