TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu revealed that France will provide Ukraine with military aid worth 195 million euros or around US$211 million using the interest from frozen Russian assets.
In an interview with the French newspaper La Tribune last weekend, Lecornu said the new aid package would support the delivery of 155-mm artillery and AASM smart bombs, which will be used by Ukrainian Mirage 2000 aircraft, as quoted by Anadolu on Sunday.
He added that France is also expediting the transfer of old military equipment, including tanks and armored vehicles, to Ukraine.
The decision was made after G7 member countries pledged in October 2024 to provide Ukraine with nearly US$50 billion, in loans backed by revenues from frozen Russian assets.
Lecornu's statement came shortly after Britain reached a similar agreement with Ukraine on March 1, 2025 to provide a loan of US$2.84 billion for defense equipment purchases.
The revenue from frozen Russian assets also supports the financial source of the loan.
Western countries have frozen Russian assets worth about US$300 billion since Moscow started the war with Ukraine.
However, most of the funds remain inaccessible. Only about US$3.2 billion is available annually from the interest of frozen Russian assets to fund initiatives as announced by France.
