TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono met with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noel Barrot, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. Sugiono emphasized France's role as a strategic partner for Indonesia.
"France is one of Indonesia's strongest partners," Sugiono said in the meeting room of the Pancasila Building at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Sugiono said that Barrot's visit was a vital step in strengthening relations between France and Indonesia. "I hope today's meeting can produce tangible outcomes for both countries," he said.
During the meeting, Barrot explained that his visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and France. He noted that cooperation in various areas, including the economy and security, was a key focus of the visit.
Barrot also expressed his desire to further enhance cooperation between the two countries. He stated that Indonesia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) play a vital role for France.
According to Sugiono, French investment in Indonesia has shown a positive trend. In 2024, French investment reached US$328 million, equivalent to Rp5.3 trillion.
"We are confident that this can be further enhanced in various sectors, and we both agree to continue encouraging this investment," Sugiono said.
Sugiono hopes that French investment in Indonesia will expand to include renewable energy, critical minerals, the creative economy, logistics, transportation, and green infrastructure. Both countries agreed to strengthen collaboration to develop a digital economic ecosystem, including training for creative talent in this field.
Barrot also emphasized France's commitment to enhancing cooperation with Indonesia in the maritime sector, focusing on maritime protection and security in the Indo-Pacific region. Indonesia and France share a strong interest in global governance, particularly maritime issues. Both countries reject confrontation and promote dialogue and multilateralism in addressing global challenges.
"Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state, while France is an Indo-Pacific nation deeply involved in maritime protection issues. We will meet again in Nice at the Third Maritime Protection Conference to strengthen this cooperation," he said.
Furthermore, Barrot announced the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP). This agreement will allow Indonesian students to pursue master's and doctoral degrees at French universities. He also mentioned plans for the signing of an agreement between the European Union and France for maritime security projects in the Indo-Pacific region.
"This project will support the security and safety of Indonesian ports, such as Jakarta and Surabaya, and enhance maritime security and trade in the region," he said.
This collaboration is expected to strengthen the strategic partnership between Indonesia and France in maintaining maritime stability and sustainability, as well as supporting economic growth in the Indo-Pacific region.
