TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A score of high-ranking figures will attend the funeral of Pope Francis at St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican, on Saturday, April 26, 2025. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres is likely to be among them.
“The UN Secretary-General intends to travel to Rome to attend the funeral of Pope Francis,” said UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on Tuesday, April 22.
From the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed his attendance, while King Charles III will be represented by his son, Prince William.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier are also attending Pope Francis' funeral, according to a report by Stuttgarter Nachrichten newspaper.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is scheduled to fly to the Vatican on Friday morning. “The president will depart from Washington on Friday morning and return to the United States on Saturday evening, following the funeral service,” White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, accompanied by First Lady Rosangela Lula da Silva, will also reportedly travel to the Vatican for the funeral ceremony.
Across Asia, several leaders are set to attend the Argentinian pope’s funeral service. Timor-Leste President Ramos Horta, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and First Lady Liza Marcos are among them. Meanwhile, Indonesia will be represented by former President Joko Widodo and several of Prabowo's appointed entourage.
The Holy See announced the death of Pope Francis on Monday morning, at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City. The funeral of the leader of the Catholic Church will be held with simplified procedures, according to the revised Funeral Rites for Roman Pontiffs (Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis) that he approved in 2024.
The late Francis requested that his body be placed in a simple wooden casket with no special decorations, but only the inscription “Franciscus.” He also ended the tradition of his predecessors, who usually used a three-layer coffin consisting of cypress, lead and oak.
Instead, Francis wanted his body to be placed in a single zinc-lined wooden casket.
Unlike previous popes who were laid to rest in luxurious caskets placed on a funeral podium called a catafalque, Pope Francis wants to be laid to rest in a simple, open casket so that the faithful can see and pray for him. As per his will, Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, Italy.
