TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The ministry of health in Gaza announced on Sunday that the death toll from Israeli attacks has increased to at least 52,243. This surge follows the ministry's count of hundreds of people previously listed as missing, and whose deaths have now been confirmed.
“An additional 697 martyrs have been added to the cumulative statistics after their data was completed and verified by the committee monitoring missing persons,” the ministry of health said in a statement as quoted by Al Arabiya.
The Gaza civil defense agency had previously announced on Sunday that Israeli attacks had killed at least eight people, including a 17-year-old teenager who was killed in an attack in a town in southern Gaza.
Israel continued its genocide in the Gaza Strip on March 18, as a violation of the ceasefire. Previously, they had agreed to a three-stage ceasefire proposed by former U.S. President Joe Biden.
However, after the first stage of the ceasefire expired, they unilaterally blocked all humanitarian aid since March 2 and bombarded Gaza again.
Civil defense spokesperson Mahmoud Bassal said on Sunday that “at least eight people have been killed and dozens injured in Israeli air strikes since dawn.”
Bassal said three people were killed when a group of civilians was attacked in the Zeitoun neighborhood in Gaza City, and three others were killed in an attack on a residential building in the Bureij refugee camp.
Bassal said two people were killed in the southern Khan Younis area, including a 17-year-old boy in an attack in the town of Khuzaa, and another person was killed when Israeli forces attacked a fishing boat off the coast.
In a separate incident near Khan Younis, an attack injured at least 12 people, most of them children, in Al-Mawasi, the civil defense spokesperson added.
Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, reportedly resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people based on official Israeli figures. Hamas also abducted 251 people, 58 of whom are still held in Gaza, including 34 people who the Israeli military claims have died as a result of Israeli bombings.
However, in an interview after being fired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant admitted that there were several casualties that day due to Israeli Apache helicopter attacks. They were killed as part of the Hannibal Directive aimed at ensuring that no Israelis are captured alive by the enemy.
