TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Muhammad Wafid stated that there was an eruption of Mount Marapi in West Sumatra on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 10:41 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time). The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a duration of 55 seconds and an amplitude of 30.4 millimeters. "No ash or eruption smoke columns were observed from the Observation Post, but the public could observe them from the direction of Kubang Putiah," he said as quoted from his statement on Saturday, March 8, 2025.
Wafid said that the volcanic mountain, with a height of 2,891 meters above sea level, is still experiencing intermittent eruptions due to the dynamics of the rise and fall of magma supply from the depth of the volcano. For example, in the past week, three eruption events were observed. The magma supply comes from a relatively shallow depth, indicated by five recorded shallow volcanic earthquakes and three deep volcanic earthquakes.
"In the past week, observation data shows smoke emissions from the Verbeek Crater which were observed up to a maximum height of 200 meters above the peak, and three eruptions with ash columns observed to reach 1,200 meters above the peak," said Wafid.
Wafid stated that the eruption of Mount Marapi occurred due to the open-close process of the conduit ventilation at the base of the Verbeek Crater, the main crater of the volcano. This process continues repeatedly as long as the supply of magma from the depth is ongoing, albeit in small quantities.
"When the lava hardens due to the cooling process, which can be accelerated by the infiltration of meteoric water, the conduit ventilation will close, resulting in the accumulation of pressure near the surface, and when the pressure saturation limit is exceeded, leading to an eruption, energy release, and the conduit ventilation reopens," said Wafid.
Wafid said that Mount Marapi, located in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, still has the potential to erupt at any time as a form of releasing accumulated pressure or energy in the volcano. "The potential danger of eruption material projection is estimated to still be within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi," he said.
The Geological Agency is currently maintaining the status of Mount Marapi's activity at Level II or Alert, with a recommendation of prohibiting human activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity, namely the Verbeek Crater. People residing around the valleys or riverbanks originating from the peak of Mount Marapi are advised to be cautious of the potential threat of lahar floods that may occur during the rainy season.
