TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) introduces the latest payment option, Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) Tap, to facilitate public transactions, especially when using public transportation. Using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, QRIS Tap offers a more practical, efficient, and secure payment experience.
"We will use NFC Tap, and if there are no obstacles, I can implement [it] in the next quarter. Currently, ASPI is ready, the industry is ready; we are preparing the business and technical aspects," said Filianingsih Hendarta, Deputy Governor of BI, during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, February 18, 2025, as quoted by CNA.
This system allows users to make payments by simply tapping their phones on the reader machine, without having to enter a QR Code as in the previous system. In addition, Fili stated that QRIS Tap based on NFC has received support from the industry, which is part of the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI).
Furthermore, the transportation sector, such as the MRT, is the first to adopt this technology.
"We start with transportation; MRT can now operate smoothly without hassle," said Fili.
How to Use QRIS Tap NFC
Summarized from various sources, here is how to use QRIS Tap NFC.
- Activate the NFC feature first.
- Open a payment application that is compatible with QRIS Tap, such as a mobile banking application or an e-wallet. Make sure the application has been updated to the latest version to ensure compatibility and transaction security.
- Select the QRIS Tap menu. In the payment application, select the QRIS menu, then choose the QRIS Tap feature.
- Enter the PIN or password to confirm identity and transaction security.
- Place the smartphone equipped with NFC technology near the payment terminal provided by the merchant.
- Once successful, the user will receive a notification on the phone screen indicating that the transaction has been completed. Check and save the received transaction proof.
The General Chairperson of ASPI, Santoso Liem, revealed that for users to utilize the QRIS Tap service, the application must be updated to be compatible with NFC technology. Therefore, this new BI service is currently only available for Android devices with NFC features and does not yet cover other devices. Several partnerships have been established, including between Artajasa and BNI, Bank Permata, Dana, and Gopay.
"Customers need to update their applications in order to use the QRIS Tap feature," said Santoso in early August.
Target Users for QRIS
BI has introduced the QRIS Tap payment system since August 2, 2024. The system will come into effect in the first quarter of 2025. This payment system is an enhancement of the popular QRIS system among the public.
To support this payment service, BI targets a transaction volume of 6.5 billion using the QRIS service in 2025. In this target, BI aims for 58 million users and 40 million merchants. To date, QRIS users have reached 55.02 million, exceeding the 55 million target.
Consequently, the transaction volume has reached 5.46 billion, which is 218 percent of the initial target of only 2.5 billion.
The Head of Payment Policy Department at BI, Dicky Kartikoyono, explained that the introduction of QRIS Tap will not replace the old model of QRIS. However, Dicky continued, QRIS Tap will serve as a complement for specific needs such as transportation and tolls that require transaction speed.
"The most effective use of tap is for situations that require speed. An example is transportation. Another example is toll roads. Tap for toll roads needs to be fast; otherwise, there will be a queue," he said.
