TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is preparing compensation for victims of floods and landslides in Sumatra whose homes were damaged, with payments ranging from Rp15 million to Rp60 million (about US$1,000–3,900).

The compensation scheme was outlined by Tito Karnavian, head of the Task Force for Accelerating Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction and Indonesia’s Minister of Home Affairs, during a disaster recovery meeting with lawmakers in Aceh on Saturday, January 10, 2026.

Tito said the policy is part of broader efforts to accelerate recovery and reduce the number of people displaced by the disaster.

“The fewer people living in temporary shelters, the closer we are to normal conditions,” Tito said during the meeting, which was broadcast on the Indonesian House of Representatives’ social media channels.

According to Tito, the disaster damaged hundreds of thousands of homes across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

Government data show that about 76,000 houses suffered minor damage, 45,000 were moderately damaged, and 53,000 were severely damaged.

Under the scheme, households will receive Rp15 million for minor damage, Rp30 million for moderate damage, and Rp60 million for severe damage.

The funds will be distributed by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to heads of affected households.

Beyond housing compensation, the government is also providing assistance for basic household furnishings and economic recovery through the Ministry of Social Affairs. Victims whose homes were severely damaged are eligible for both temporary shelter and permanent housing support.

The floods and landslides were triggered by Tropical Cyclone Senyar, which struck three provinces in Sumatra in late November 2025. As of Friday, January 9, BNPB reported 1,182 deaths, including 544 in Aceh, 372 in North Sumatra, and 264 in West Sumatra. At least 145 people remain missing.

BNPB also reported that 238,627 people are still displaced across the three provinces, with the vast majority—more than 214,000—located in Aceh.
