The Greenland election will take place on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. Amid the interest of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in acquiring Greenland, the world's largest island remains a part of Denmark, with its foreign policy, defense, and monetary policies decided in Copenhagen, as quoted from Euronews on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
About Greenland
Trump's Ambition
Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire Greenland. Most recently, he voiced this desire in his address to Congress on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. Since before his second term began, Trump has stated his intention to incorporate Greenland into the United States.
In his speech, Trump said that the unification of Greenland with America would bring many benefits, especially for the people living on the island. "We will keep you safe. We will make you rich. Together, we will take Greenland to a level that you never imagined before," Trump said.
Rejection
Based on polls, the majority of the Greenlandic people oppose this idea, although they tend to support independence from Denmark. Greenland's Prime Minister, Mute Egede, stated that Greenland is not something that can be bought or taken over by another country.
Prime Minister Mute Egede also mentioned that the people of Greenland have the right to determine their own destiny and do not want to be under the control of the United States or Denmark. "We don't want to be part of America, nor part of Denmark. We are Kalaallit (Greenlandic people)," wrote Egede in a post on Facebook.
As a NATO ally, Denmark has stated that its autonomous territory is not for sale. Denmark's Ambassador to the United Nations, Christina Markus Lassen, said that the future of Greenland is entirely determined by its people. This decision must be respected by all parties, including the United States, as quoted from Reuters.
Greenland Independence
Trump's renewed interest in Greenland has sparked a new wave in the independence movement on the island. Many voices are urging Greenland to hold a referendum for independence and to separate from Denmark. The current ruling party in Greenland, Inuit Ataqatigiit, has emphasized that although there is a desire for full sovereignty, the decision to separate from Denmark will not be rushed.
They point out that there are many aspects to consider, especially the economic impact and social welfare that may arise from the change in Greenland's political status.
Denmark's Foreign Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, stated that Trump's remarks regarding self-determination rights for Greenland are an important part of his speech. "Greenland is still not for sale and the decision regarding the future of the territory must come from its people without external pressure."
As the Greenland election scheduled for March 11, 2025 approaches, the issue of independence has become one of the main topics in political debates.
