TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hamas sources and witnesses said the Israeli blockade on deliveries to the war-stricken Gaza Strip has caused prices to soar, and led to fears of food shortages.
In response, Hamas will take stringent action against merchants who excessively raise prices, deploying police force to local markets across the enclave.
They questioned and detained merchants and cautioned them against raising prices during a standoff over a ceasefire deal. The Hamas-run police force also cracked down on merchants, seizing supplies and resold them at lower prices.
Local authorities encourage Gaza residents to report any misconduct by merchants, as the food supply in Gaza may now only last for two weeks.
"Punishing junior sellers in markets is good, but Hamas must act against the big merchants who control what we eat," said one witness to Reuters.
Israel has stopped all humanitarian aid from entering Gaza over a dispute with Hamas on how to proceed with the next phase of the ceasefire deal. The first phase ended on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
The Office of the Prime Minister of Israel posted on X on Sunday, March 2, 2025, about the temporary halt in the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, saying that it is confident the aid will last for months.
Humanitarian agencies, however, say supplies for food, medicine, and shelter in the Gaza Strip are limited and stranded aid might spoil.
