UNICEF notes that feelings of sadness can intensify during highly commercialized holidays like Valentine's Day. So, how to get through a breakup?
1. Set Boundaries
Psychology Today suggests setting clear boundaries when going through a breakup. Doing so can help reduce feelings of being overwhelmed and unsure about how to spend the day. Consider reaching out to friends for a day out, honoring the love you have for yourself.
2. Practice Self-Compassion
A breakup is a chance to be kind to yourself. Prioritize self-care, be understanding, and allow yourself to process your emotions at your own pace. Comforting activities like meditation, cooking, or watching a favorite movie can be helpful.
3. Stay Active
Exercise benefits both mental and physical health. A relaxing walk, breathing exercises, or engaging in your favorite workout can release endorphins, which help to alleviate stress, anxiety, and sadness.
4. Express Yourself Through Writing
Crying can offer relief, but there are other healthy ways to cope with a breakup. Consider journaling your emotions or having open conversations with a trusted friend. Consistently expressing your feelings can aid in emotional healing.
5. Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks
Stress often triggers cravings for sweets like ice cream and cakes. While these might offer temporary comfort, excessive sugar consumption can contribute to health issues. Instead, opt for nutritious mood-boosting foods such as bananas, avocados, and dark leafy greens.
