TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A heatwave is currently gripping Europe. On Monday, June 30, 2025, surface temperatures reached extreme levels, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) predicted that most parts of the continent are expected to experience far-above-average temperatures in the coming days.
Minimum nighttime temperatures have remained very high in many southern European regions during the last days of June. "The current June-July heatwave is exposing millions of Europeans to high heat stress," said Samantha Burgess, ECMWF Strategic Climate Leader, as quoted on the climate.copernicus.eu website on July 1, 2025.
ECMWF analysts' data shows that Europe has endured very high temperatures since early June 2025. The observed temperatures are more typical for July and August and usually occur only a few times each summer. According to Samantha, European temperatures are likely to mirror those of 2024, which was recorded as the hottest year.
"Climate change is making heatwaves more frequent, more intense, and impacting larger geographical areas," Samantha added.
Meanwhile, according to accuweather.com, extreme and dangerous heatwaves, with temperatures reaching 30-40 degrees Celsius, will only gradually subside in some parts of Europe while persisting in other regions during the first week of July 2025. Extreme weather will continue into the first few days of July across many areas, with cooler air expected to arrive in some parts of the continent soon.
"The extreme heat is being produced by a dome of high pressure associated with a northward bulge in the jet stream," explained Jason Nicholls, AccuWeather's International Meteorology Head. "This setup tends to lock out any cool air from moving southward and allows the air to get hotter in place."
Portugal set a national temperature record in June with 46.6 degrees Celsius in Mora. Barcelona, Spain, reached 37.9 degrees Celsius, and Ourense, Spain, rose to 41.6 degrees Celsius, with both cities setting all-time records for the month of June.
Nicholls clarified that for the pattern to change, the high-pressure dome must weaken or shift position. If this combination of changes occurs over time, it will be sufficient to bring cooler air to northwestern Europe and alleviate the heat in some central European regions.
"There will be one more hot day around London on Tuesday, then it should cool down on Wednesday. Cooling will reach northern France, the Benelux region, and western Germany on Thursday," Nicholas projected.
The highest temperatures in London are expected to be in the 20-degree Celsius range on Wednesday, with similar highs projected for Paris on Thursday.
