TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto is set to visit the United States to negotiate trade tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, starting Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
Airlangga explained that the mission was carried out under the directive of President Prabowo Subianto, who emphasized the importance of prioritizing the national interest.
“Negotiate to the best of our ability for the national interest,” said Airlangga.
When asked whether President Prabowo had set a specific target regarding the tariff amount, Airlangga responded, “There is none.”
Airlangga Hartarto had previously confirmed his departure to the United States to negotiate trade tariffs implemented by President Donald Trump.
Airlangga was reluctant to disclose the strategy to be used to alleviate Trump's tariffs. His reason being that the strategy cannot be disclosed to the wider public.
"There is no guesswork, no pressure, and no targets announced to the public," said Airlangga after attending the Russia-Indonesia business forum at Hotel Raffles, Central Jakarta, on Monday, April 14, 2025.
He also refused to mention the magnitude of the tariff reduction that the government aims to achieve. What is clear, according to Airlangga, is that the government's target from the negotiations is to lower reciprocal import tariffs.
Airlangga also did not elaborate on his preparations for the next day. "My business card, special strategies are not for the public," said Airlangga jokingly about his negotiation preparations.
He stated that he would also speak with the Chairperson of the National Economic Council Luhut Binsar Panjaitan and the U.S. Secretary of Commerce this afternoon.
In addition to Airlangga, the government also sent delegation members such as Finance Minister Sri Mulyani and Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Djiwandono.
Donald Trump has suspended all high import tariffs imposed on several countries for 90 days. Trump stated that the decision was made because several countries showed enthusiasm to negotiate with him.
Before the suspension, Trump imposed a 32 percent import tariff on Indonesia.
In his Truth Social post announcing the 90-day suspension of tariffs, Trump claimed that "more than 75 countries" had contacted U.S. officials to pursue new trade agreements.
