TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of casualties from the Hong Kong fire rose to 146 on Sunday, making the massive blaze at the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex the deadliest tragedy in Hong Kong in nearly eight decades.

Police said that the casualty enquiry unit has confirmed that 159 people previously reported missing are "safe," while the identification process continues.

The head of the casualty enquiry unit, Tsang Shuk-yin, stated that the number of injured victims reached 79 people as of Sunday at 04:00 p.m. local time, including 12 firefighters.

There are currently 100 reports of missing individuals that cannot be traced due to incomplete data, the reportees not having the missing persons' addresses, or the reported individuals not being residents of Wang Fuk Court, she said.

As many as 40 people are still reported missing, and search efforts continue, as reported by the South China Morning Post, as quoted by Anadolu.

Hong Kong has entered a three-day mourning period starting Saturday to honor the victims, while the rescue operation enters its fifth day despite the fire being successfully contained.

Local authorities have warned that the death toll may increase following the discovery of more bodies in the burned-out building.

The fire at the Wang Fuk Court complex, which has more than 1,900 units, occurred on Wednesday afternoon and spread rapidly. The fire is believed to have been triggered by bamboo scaffolding installed on the exterior of the building.

The complex consists of eight towers housing around 4,000 people. By Friday, about 800 residents had been evacuated to hotels and temporary shelters.

Police have detained two directors and a technical consultant from Prestige Construction & Engineering Company on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.

According to investigators, the bamboo scaffolding and plastic materials covering the windows accelerated the spread of the fire, engulfing several floors within minutes.

This tragedy marks the first fire in the last 17 years in Hong Kong to reach a level 5 emergency status, the highest category in the city's disaster response system.
