TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Super Typhoon Ragasa lashed Hong Kong on Wednesday, September 24, with maximum wind speeds of 195 kilometers per hour. According to Al Jazeera, the Hong Kong Observatory issued the highest level T10 warning and warned of possible landslides.

"Members of the public should be on high alert and beware of destructive winds. Local weather will be persistently adverse today, with frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms. Seas will be phenomenal with swells," the observatory statement said.

According to ABC News, strong winds woke residents up early in the morning. Typhoon Ragasa had previously been categorized as a super typhoon and had passed 100 kilometers south of Hong Kong.

Damage in the City

Strong winds damaged the roof of a pedestrian bridge and felled hundreds of trees in various parts of the city. A ship was swept by the current and hit the shore, shattering glass railing along the waterfront.

Areas around rivers and promenades were flooded, including bike lanes and playgrounds. According to Hong Kong Free Press, 90 people were hospitalized due to injuries.

More than 700 flights were canceled due to the storm. Schools were closed, and many shops opted to close up. Hundreds of residents evacuated to temporary shelters in Hong Kong and Macau.

In Macau, the streets also turned into rushing streams with debris scattered. Rescuers used rubber boats to evacuate trapped residents, while local power suppliers cut off the electricity in some low-lying areas that were flooded.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Ragasa is the strongest tropical cyclone in the northwest Pacific and South China Sea this year. Preliminary analysis indicates that this storm ranks as the second strongest in the region since 1950, on par with Typhoon Saola (2023) and Yagi (2024).

Casualties in Taiwan and the Philippines

Ragasa previously triggered disasters in Taiwan and the Philippines. In Hualien, Taiwan, 15 people died after a barrier lake overflowed and destroyed a bridge. Roads in Guangfu turned into raging currents, sweeping away cars and belongings. 32 people were injured, and hundreds were evacuated.

In northern Philippines, 10 people died, including seven fishers whose boat capsized off the coast of Cagayan. Five fishers remain missing. According to provincial officials, nearly 700,000 people were affected, with 25,000 evacuating to government shelters.

According to CCTV, Ragasa made landfall on Hailing Island, Yangjiang City, Guangdong, packing maximum wind speeds of 144 kilometers per hour. Nearly 1.9 million people were relocated.

In Chuandao, wind gusts reached 241 kilometers per hour, the highest since recording began. Large waves also hit the coast of Zhuhai, while heavy rain brought down trees on the streets.
