TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid explained how content promoting online gambling is spread through social media comments. The perpetrators first monitor social media activity in real time before launching their operations.
"Based on reports received by the Ministry of Communication and Digital, the spam operation was carried out through a system capable of monitoring social media activity in real time," said Meutya in a press conference at the Ministry of Communication and Digital's office in Jakarta on Tuesday, as quoted by ANTARA.
The perpetrator's system will monitor social media activity until it detects a spike in interactions on an account. Once the spike in interactions is detected, the perpetrator will post a promotional comment to that account.
According to Meutya, the perpetrators can send up to thousands of comments automatically using accounts operated by machines or bots. She assessed that the increasingly organized attack patterns and the use of technology showed that handling spam comments could not be done by the government alone.
Therefore, Meutya continued, cross-institutional collaboration and support from digital platform companies are needed to strengthen prevention and enforcement efforts against the spread of anti-online gambling content in the digital space.
"This requires cross-agency collaboration, not just from the government but also from the private sector, particularly platforms, to address this issue," she said.
On the same occasion, Meutya said that spam comments containing promotional material for online gambling were mostly found on the social media accounts of regional influencers with high interaction.
"The primary target (of spam comments) has shifted. The distribution of targets shows that the most spammed accounts are those with high engagement," she said.
She explained that 52 percent of the offensive comments were found on regional influencer accounts, 31 percent on government agency accounts, 12 percent on mass media accounts, and 5 percent on accounts belonging to public figures and politicians.
