Hundreds of Israelis Protest in Tel Aviv, Urge Netanyahu to Abide by Ceasefire

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of Israeli citizens rallied in central Tel Aviv on Monday night, demanding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to finalize the hostage exchange agreement and implement a ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza.

The protest initially marked the birthday of Alon Ohel, who has been in captivity in Gaza for two years.

However, more and more demonstrators joined the protest after Hamas announced the postponement of the release of the sixth batch of hostages until Israel fully complies with the agreement. The sixth hostage release was scheduled for this Saturday

They pressured the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to uphold the agreement.

According to the Israeli news site Walla as quoted by Anadolu, the demonstrators burned and lit torches and blocked both directions of Begin Road near Kirya, the headquarters of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, causing major traffic disruptions.

Shouting "Bring Them All Back Now" and "Enough War," the demonstrators carried posters condemning the government's handling of the agreement.

Some protesters accused Netanyahu of deliberately obstructing the agreement, chanting, "The Israeli government wrecked the deal" and "Netanyahu wrecked the deal."

As the humanitarian crisis deepens, Gaza’s local authorities have called on international mediators to pressure Israel into implementing the ceasefire's humanitarian provisions, ensuring sufficient aid reaches the besieged enclave. However, these efforts have so far been unsuccessful.

On Monday night, Hamas asserted that they had fully honored their commitments under the ceasefire deal but accused Israel of breaching four key provisions.

Earlier that same day, Hamas' military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, announced a delay in the next hostage release, stating that it would only proceed once Israel complies with all terms of the agreement.

A three-phase ceasefire agreement has been in place in Gaza since January 19, halting Israel's genocidal war that has killed more than 48,000 people and left the enclave in ruins.

In the first phase of the ceasefire, which lasted until early March, 33 Israeli hostages would be released in exchange for a number of Palestinian prisoners. The sixth Israel-Hamas exchange was scheduled for this week.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces genocide cases at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war on the enclave.
