'I Hope Justice Will Prevail Today,' Nadiem Makarim Says Ahead of Verdict

4 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim is awaiting the verdict of the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, in a case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) within the ministry during the 2019–2022 period.

The ruling will determine the fate of the founder of Gojek, who is accused by prosecutors of corruption in the government’s digital learning device procurement project.

"Whatever happens today, I believe I am not alone. I have my family, and I have support from various sectors of society," Nadiem said upon arriving at the Jakarta Corruption Court building on Tuesday.

Nadiem maintained that his decisions while leading the ministry were made correctly and said he believed justice would prevail.

"I believe I am on the side of truth, and because of that, Allah will never abandon me," he said. "Today, anything can happen, but of course, my hope is that justice will prevail today."

In the previous hearing, presiding judge Purwanto S. Abdullah said the panel of judges would consider all arguments, evidence, and statements presented by both the prosecution and defense throughout the trial before issuing the verdict.

"With clear hearts and firm convictions, the panel of judges will deliberate and deliver justice through the reading of the verdict," Purwanto said during the hearing on June 23.

Prosecutors previously demanded an 18-year prison sentence for Nadiem, along with a Rp1 billion fine, which would be replaced by 190 days of imprisonment if unpaid. They also requested Rp5.68 trillion in compensation, with an alternative sentence of nine years in prison if the payment is not fulfilled.

The prosecution alleged that Nadiem violated Indonesia’s Corruption Law in conjunction with Article 20(c) of Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code.

Prosecutors accused Nadiem of personally benefiting Rp809.59 billion from the case and alleged that he favored 12 private companies as Chromebook suppliers.

According to the prosecution, the decision to use Chromebooks was driven by Nadiem’s business interests, allegedly to encourage Google to increase investment and place funds in PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (AKAB), a company founded by Nadiem.

Following the 2021 merger between Gojek and Tokopedia, PT AKAB became part of PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia. Google had previously been one of Gojek’s long-standing business partners.

Prosecutors estimated that the procurement caused state losses totaling Rp2.18 trillion. The figure includes Rp1.56 trillion from the procurement of Chromebook laptops, based on an audit by Indonesia’s Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP).

The remaining losses were attributed to the procurement of Chrome Device Management licenses, amounting to US$44.05 million, or approximately Rp621.38 billion based on the lowest exchange rate recorded between August 2020 and December 2022.

Nadiem has denied wrongdoing in the case.
