TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer on Wednesday shot and killed a woman in the head in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at close range during a major immigration crackdown rolled out by President Donald Trump's administration.

As reported by ABC News, federal officials deemed the shooting an act of self-defense, but Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described it as "reckless" and unnecessary.

Frey even called for ICE officers to leave Minneapolis.

The brutal incident was captured in a video, showing the victim's car in the middle of the road on Portland Avenue. As ICE officers approached the vehicle and demanded that the driver open the door, the car began to pull forward.

Another ICE officer standing in front of the woman's car fired two bullets towards the victim's head before the vehicle hit the sidewalk and stopped.

Some activists claimed the officers blocked a physician who was trying to help the victim. Minneapolis police stated that the woman died at the hospital.

The woman shot and killed by the ICE agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday was identified by her mother, Donna Ganger, as Renee Nicole Good, 37 years old, as reported by The Minnesota Star Tribune.

She is reported to have left behind a 6-year-old child. Her husband passed away in 2023.

Ganger said that her daughter lived in the Twin Cities with her partner. The family was informed of the death on Wednesday morning.

"That’s so stupid," said Ganger, after learning some of the circumstances from a reporter. "She was probably terrified."

Ganger said her daughter was "not part of anything like that at all," referring to protesters challenging ICE agents.

“Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” she said. “She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”

The incident occurred during protests against alleged immigration enforcement activities in the southern part of Minnesota city, according to local media reports.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, defended the incident. “Attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them – an act of domestic terrorism,” the Department of Homeland Security claimed X, as reported by Al Arabiya.

“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. The alleged perpetrator was hit and is deceased. The ICE officers who were hurt are expected to make full recoveries," it said.

At the same location, an ICE agent was seen using pepper spray on demonstrators during an immigration crackdown in the southern area of Minneapolis.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz urged the public to remain calm while his team gathers information on the shooting tragedy.

Dozens of protesters and civilians were seen at the scene after the incident. “There’s no way whatever this person did that they deserved to be killed for it,” a civilian told the broadcaster.

Trump has made a crackdown on what he deemed unlawful immigration and the expulsion of undocumented migrants a top priority during his second term, and has tightened requirements for entering the United States and obtaining visas.

During his campaign, Trump likened undocumented migrants to "animals," often linking them, without evidence, to criminal behavior.

ICE, accused by critics of becoming a paramilitary force under Trump, has been tasked with deporting a large number of undocumented migrants during the staunch Republican's second term in office.
