India Shuts Airspace to Pakistani Airlines Amid Rising Tensions

5 hours ago 16

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indian government announced that it’s closing its airspace to Pakistani airlines, a move that comes after Pakistan banned Indian airlines from flying into its airspace.

Over the past six days, Indian and Pakistani forces have engaged in a series of skirmishes. As reported by Sky News, India claims that the first shots were fired by Pakistani forces along the 460-mile de facto border that spans Kashmir. No casualties were reported. The Pakistani military has yet to respond to these allegations.

The United States has urged India and Pakistan to work together to de-escalate tensions over Kashmir. This comes in the wake of the killing of 26 people, mostly Indian tourists, by armed assailants in the disputed region, which both states claim as their own.

India has accused Pakistan of backing the attack that occurred in the Pahalfam resort town on April 22, 2025. India claims to have identified three attackers, including two Pakistani nationals, whom they referred to as terrorists rebelling against the Muslim-majority in Kashmir. Pakistan has denied any involvement and has called for a neutral investigation.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has spoken separately with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The U.S. has voiced support for India in combating extremism and has urged Pakistan to cooperate in the investigation of the attack.

Pakistan has claimed that India is poised to launch a retaliatory attack in Kashmir. Pakistani authorities have asserted that they have credible intelligence indicating an imminent military strike by India.

"We have reinforced our forces because it is something which is imminent now. So in that situation, some strategic decisions have to be taken, so those decisions have been taken," said Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif in an interview in Islamabad on Tuesday, as reported by Middle East Eye.

Pakistani officials reaffirmed the claims of an impending attack in a press conference on Wednesday. On Tuesday night, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ataullah Tarar made the announcement in a post on X, that India will attack “in the next 24-36 hours under the pretext of baseless and concocted allegations of involvement in the Pahalgam incident.”

"Pakistan reiterates that any such military adventurism by India would be responded to assuredly and decisively. The International community must remain alive to the reality that the onus of escalatory spiral and its ensuing consequences shall squarely lie with India," said Tarrar.
