TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Reverberating at the start of the year, the idea of indirect regional head elections—choosing governors, mayors, and regents through regional legislative councils—has begun to fade. President Prabowo Subianto had floated the idea several times, arguing that direct elections impose high political costs. A draft Regional Head Election Law—intended to set the rules for local polls—has also been removed from the package of revisions to the General Election Law now under deliberation in the House of Representatives (DPR).
Ahmad Doli Kurnia, a member of House Commission II overseeing elections and governance, said discussions on indirect elections have stalled as lawmakers prioritize revising the General Election Law. “We don’t even know when the elections will be held,” the Golkar Party politician told Tempo on Friday, April 24, 2026.
Golkar has been one of the parties supporting elections through regional legislatures. The party, symbolized by the banyan tree, included the proposal as one of the outcomes of its national leadership meeting in December 2025.
However, not all Golkar politicians backed the idea. Four party insiders said some senior figures objected to supporting indirect elections, fearing the party’s vote share could drop sharply due to inconsistency. Golkar has long campaigned under the slogan “The Voice of Golkar is the Voice of the People.”
