TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono received a working visit from Timor Leste's Foreign Minister Bendito dos Santos Freitas in Jakarta. Bendito's visit aimed to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries, particularly in enhancing economic partnership, resolving border issues, and supporting Timor Leste's full accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
"The partnership between Indonesia and Timor Leste continues to evolve with a spirit of brotherhood. We want to ensure that this cooperation brings concrete benefits to the people of both countries," said Sugiono on Monday, March 3, 2025, as quoted from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs's official release.
In the economic field, Sugiono appreciated the ongoing economic cooperation. Indonesia is Timor Leste's main trading partner with a trade value reaching US$391.3 million in 2024, an increase of 12.31 percent from the previous year.
"I appreciate the progress in the Bilateral Investment Treaty negotiations. Accelerating Indonesia's investment permits, including the operations of state-owned enterprises in Timor Leste, is crucial to foster closer economic cooperation," he stated.
Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment as Timor Leste's development partner. He mentioned that Indonesia is ready to strengthen support for Timor Leste's national development through further collaboration.
Moreover, Sugiono emphasized Indonesia's support for Timor Leste's full ASEAN membership, including through capacity-building programs.
"Timor Leste is part of the ASEAN family, and Indonesia is ready to support steps toward full integration," Sugiono expressed.
Indonesia and Timor Leste's development cooperation in recent years has continued to progress, including diplomatic training, financial management reforms, scholarships, and aquaculture development.
Both foreign ministers are committed to constructively resolving border issues based on good neighborly spirit and the principle of mutual respect.
"A comprehensive resolution of border issues will open up economic opportunities and enhance community connectivity along the border," Sugiono stated.
At the end of the meeting, Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's commitment to further strengthening the strategic partnership with Timor Leste. The two foreign ministers also agreed to revitalize the Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) as a strategic forum at the foreign ministerial level to review and develop bilateral cooperation.
