TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that currently, there are as many as 329 Indonesian citizens in Iran. Most of them are students pursuing an education in Iran. A small number are migrant workers or Indonesian citizens visiting the country.

"As has been frequently mentioned, there are 329 people in Iran, with the majority located in the city of Qom," said the Acting Director for Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, in a press release broadcasted on the ministry's YouTube channel on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Qom is a province located in the central part of Iran, approximately 156 kilometers southwest of the capital, Tehran. According to Heni, considering the escalating war between Iran, the United States, and Israel, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will evacuate Indonesian citizens from Iran gradually.

The first phase of the evacuation will begin this week, with 32 citizens being repatriated. They will be evacuated through Azerbaijan. "The next evacuation plans will be decided by the Indonesian government after the most up-to-date security considerations," said Heni.

She ensured that the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran continues to reach out and communicate with Indonesian citizens still in the Tehran area. The Indonesian Embassy will assist Indonesian citizens in Iran affected by the country's conflict.

Previously, Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that Indonesian citizens in Iran will return home via a land route through Baku, Azerbaijan. "Because the airspace is currently closed. For instance, if the evacuation is from Tehran, it will take them ten hours to travel to Baku," said Sugiono at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday night, March 3, 2026.

However, he mentioned that not all Indonesian citizens in Iran wish to be evacuated. Nevertheless, Sugiono emphasized that the government is ready to facilitate those who express their willingness to be evacuated.

"I have instructed our Ambassador in Tehran to take immediate evacuation measures if there are Indonesian people who wish to be evacuated," said Sugiono at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday night, March 3, 2026.
