Indonesia Condemns Israel's Attempt to Undermine Gaza Ceasefire

3 hours ago 7

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian government announced its stance on Israel’s attempt to undermine the ceasefire deal with the Palestinian resistance group Hamas. The statement was conveyed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an official release on Monday, March 3, 2025.

"Indonesia condemns Israel's attempts to undermine the ceasefire by violating its initial terms, unilaterally demanding an extension of phase one, and refusing to engage in talks for phase two," the official statement on the ministry website read.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers Israel's efforts to obstruct humanitarian aid to Gaza and using it as leverage in the ceasefire negotiations as a war crime and a “blatant violation” of international humanitarian law and human rights.

"Indonesia urges the international community to pressure Israel to immediately allow aid deliveries and resume talks for phase two per the ceasefire terms," the official statement read.

Indonesia also reaffirmed its “unwavering support” for the two-state solution, calling it the “only viable path to lasting peace” in the region.

Two Reuters sources in the Israeli government revealed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to hold consultations with security chiefs and ministers on Friday, February 28, 2025, local time. This step was taken after an Israeli delegation returned from Cairo without any results regarding the extension of the ceasefire.

Sources within Hamas confirmed that Tel Aviv is trying to extend the 42-day-old ceasefire. The ceasefire is currently in place due to the start of the Ramadan, which began this weekend.

Hamas wants negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire, leading to a permanent ceasefire to end the war in Gaza. "We are committed to the agreement," said a Hamas source.

The first phase of the ceasefire was implemented after 15 months of turmoil in Gaza. In the first phase, a total of 33 Israeli citizens and 5 Thai citizens held captive were released.

They were exchanged for 2,000 Palestinian prisoners held in various Israeli prisons. Subsequently, the ceasefire was supposed to lead to negotiations for building a permanent ceasefire agreement immediately after the release of all captives.

Hamas called on the international community on Friday, February 28, 2025, to pressure Israel to enter the second phase of the ceasefire without delay.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu halted the entry of humanitarian aid to Gaza on Sunday, just hours after the first phase of the ceasefire ended.

He has been trying to prolong the first phase exchange to secure the release of as many Israeli hostages as possible without offering anything in return or fulfilling the military and humanitarian obligations of the agreement.

Hamas has rejected this proposal and insisted that Israel must comply with the ceasefire terms and immediately begin negotiations for the second phase. This includes a full withdrawal of Israel from Gaza and the complete cessation of hostilities.
