TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Ministry of Health says Indonesia is currently short of 1,500 cardiologists. Ministry data shows that approximately 296,000 people in Indonesia die from cardiovascular diseases every year.

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said the high mortality rate of cardiovascular diseases in Indonesia is attributed to the lack of cardiologists in the country with competence in interventional cardiology.

Interventional cardiology is a branch of cardiology that aims to help people suffering from heart disease with treatment without the need for major surgery.

“We must speed up the availability of such services to save hundreds of thousands of lives,” he said during the release ceremony of overseas fellowship candidates to China and Japan on Monday, January 6, 2025.

According to the minister, Indonesia lacks around 350 to 400 cardiologists with interventional cardiology capabilities to ensure each district in Indonesia has at least one designated doctor. To ensure medical services are available 24 hours per day, he said, each district would require three doctors, thereby necessitating at least 1,500 specialist doctors.

Additionally, Budi mentioned that the government has prepared the necessary equipment that allows patients to forgo major heart surgery called a cath lab, which he said will be installed gradually in 514 districts by 2027. To operate this equipment, he went on, requires cardiologists with interventional competence.

To overcome this, Budi decided to send cardiologists abroad to study interventional cardiology. This year, the Ministry of Health will send 27 participants in stages to continue their education abroad. Of these, 22 will focus on interventional cardiology, while the other 5 will study neurointervention. This program is funded by the Education Fund Management Agency (LPDP).
