TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -- The executive board of students (BEM) in various universities held a demonstration titled Indonesia Gelap (Dark Indonesia) today, Monday, February 17, 2025. They demanded accountability for several policies of the government of Prabowo Subianto that are not pro-people.

The Coordinator of the All-Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM SI) Satria Naufal said that the title Indonesia Gelap is interpreted as the fear of Indonesians regarding the nation's future. "For us, Indonesia Gelap adequately represents the fear, concerns, and welfare of the people," he said when contacted on Monday, February 17, 2025.

He assessed that in Prabowo's leadership era, society was often haunted by issues and policies that did not favor the people. Because of this, he said that this demonstration should serve as a reminder for the government when making policies.

"A warning for the government to continue to consider all aspects in governing," said Satria.

The hashtag #IndonesiaGelap has started to gain attention on the social media platform X. As of Monday morning, as many as 39 thousand X users talked about #IndonesiaGelap, which became the students' action today.

Before taking to the streets, this group of students consolidated with civil society coalitions. They are the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) and the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI).

Based on information from the social media account @bemsi.official, today's action will take place simultaneously in various regions of Indonesia. These include Jakarta, Bandung, Lampung, Surabaya, Malang, Samarinda, Banjarmasin, Aceh, and Bali, where they will hold rallies at the government offices of each city today.

The BEM SI demonstration and civil society coalitions in several other regions are scheduled for February 18 or 19. Specifically in Jakarta, the action will take place around the Patung Kuda area, Central Jakarta.

Several demands that will be brought in the action include the efficiency of the Red and White Cabinet structurally and technically; urging Prabowo to issue a Presidential Regulation on Asset Seizure; rejecting the revisions of the TNI, Polri, and Attorney General Law; evaluating the total implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal program; creating free education; rejecting the Mineral and Coal Mining Law revisions; abolishing the dual function of the military in the sector; police reform; rejecting the revisions of the House of Representatives rules of procedure; and realizing the budget for lecturers' allowances.
