TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - With support from KOICA, UNESCO and the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO, convened the Regional Meeting on Education for Sustainable Peace, marking a historic step for the region and charting a new course for preventing conflict and achieving lasting peace. From September 24 to 25, governments, educators, and civil society organizations from across Southeast Asia will come together for the first time to promote peace through education.
The meeting comes at a time when hate speech, polarization, and violent conflict are intensifying worldwide. Southeast Asia is pivotal to global peace and stability. The region is shaped by complex histories of conflict and reconciliation and is home to extraordinary cultural and political diversity. Faced with urgent challenges and unique opportunities, the region is working collectively to leverage education as a means of building resilience.
Guided by the 2023 UNESCO Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development, the event highlights the importance of education as a long-term investment in countering discrimination, transforming conflicts, and reshaping legacies of violence.
The Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Jakarta, Maki Katsuno-Hayashikawa, stated that education is one of the most powerful means of building resilience, fostering respect for diversity, and laying the foundations for lasting peace. "This meeting is an opportunity to transform shared aspirations into concrete regional action," she added.
At the same moment, Indonesian Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, sees quality education can nurture literacy across cultures and religions, helping the younger generation to see differences not as a threat but as a gift. "When children learn about other people’s beliefs and traditions, hatred fades, stereotypes disappear, and bridges of empathy begin to grow," he said.
During the two-day event, participants will explore strategies for transforming education systems to address the root causes of conflict. They will also share case studies and examine the role of education in post-conflict recovery. Additionally, they will highlight the important contributions of young people, educators, and civil society in countering hate speech and sustaining peace through education, including in the digital world.
Meanwhile, Executive Chair of the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO, Dr. Ananto Kusuma Seta, hopes this cooperation will lead to peaceful societies. “By strengthening collaboration among governments, youth, civil society, and international partners, Southeast Asia can chart a path toward more peaceful, just, and inclusive societies,” he said.
The meeting aims to strengthen trust and partnerships across Southeast Asia by bringing together diverse perspectives under one roof. This will culminate in a regional Plan of Action to advance peace through education. The meeting will set out concrete recommendations to foster peace education in the region.
