TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita held a bilateral meeting with Jon Dove, Associate Government Affairs Director of Xiaomi Communications Co., Ltd., in Shanghai, China, on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Also in attendance were the Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry, Eko S.A. Cahyanto; the Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics (ILMATE), Setia Diarta; and PT Xiaomi Technology Indonesia representatives Zhao Wentao, Managing Director, and Tel Lee, Product Certification Manager.
During the meeting, Minister Agus expressed his gratitude for Xiaomi's investment and contributions to developing the smartphone and television industry in Indonesia. "The Indonesian government highly appreciates Xiaomi's commitment to continuing to invest and develop its product line in Indonesia," said Agus in a written statement on Monday, October 13, 2025.
Agus stated that the Indonesian government supports Xiaomi's plan to produce tablets locally in the country, especially models that are already available domestically. He hopes that Xiaomi will submit a five-year business plan soon.
"We encourage Xiaomi to submit a detailed business plan immediately, so they can realize their new investment plans in Indonesia. The plan should include strategies for developing production facilities independently and in collaboration with local partners," he said.
Agus also highlighted Xiaomi's investment opportunities in electric vehicles (EVs), not just in the electronics sector. The Ministry of Industry is encouraging Xiaomi to invest in Indonesia. "We are aware that Xiaomi has launched a high-performance electric vehicle, the Xiaomi SU7. We encourage Xiaomi to explore investing in environmentally friendly vehicles in Indonesia. This will provide Indonesian consumers with more vehicle options while strengthening the national green industry ecosystem," he said.
Founded in 2010, Xiaomi Communications Co., Ltd. is a Chinese multinational technology company based in Beijing. It operates in the fields of consumer electronics, intelligent manufacturing, and Internet of Things (IoT) platforms.
By 2025, Xiaomi had invested Rp3 trillion in Indonesia for the production of smartphones, tablets, and televisions. It is now one of the leading smartphone brands in Indonesia, with a 21 percent market share in the second quarter of 2025.
According to Agus, Xiaomi's investment contributes to job creation, technology transfer, and strengthening the competitiveness of the national electronics industry. "This aligns with the Making Indonesia 4.0 vision, which prioritizes the electronics sector," he said.
